I vote for what I believe affects everyone’s life more positively, even if it’s not necessarily a benefit to my specific situation. I might not be gay but I would vote for the candidate who supports gay marriage vs the one that might give me a $1000 check for tariff profits.

On the topic of tariffs, voters were outright lied to, so I won’t criticize people for believing it. I’d be surprised if most people graduating high school now even know what a tariff is, much less how they work.

I remember reading somewhere the disgust is a strong motivator for right wing voters. It was a study where simply cleaning the area where people vote increased support for progressive candidates.
If we have a progressive president, the trick would be for them to exude an aura of courage and certainty. FDR and Theodore did that, and are among the top five American presidents for it. Before him, Theodore, was willing to risk his own flesh in battle and to remain standing after being shot by an assassin.

I think my “reaction” was fairly normal for common people reading an internet comment. Most people aren’t going to take the time to analyze every occurrence of divisive language like that.
If I were a Republican, and someone suggested that I “made out with my sister,” then I’d probably sense a disrespectful tone in what I’m reading. It’s unfortunate that it “contaminated” the surrounding text which was actually making a decent point.

When Trump first started talking about tariffs this is exactly what everybody said. Unless you also introduce schemes to assist with setting up infrastructure in the US then the tariffs are not going to have the desired effect.
Nobody is going to set up a factory if there’s every possibility that the tariffs will go away at some point in the next 4 years. Not unless the cost of setting up that factory is ameliorated somehow. Otherwise companies are just going to accept they’re going to get fewer orders from the US for the next few years.
Especially if setting up a factory in another country means that your staff are likely to get abducted by ICE for no reason.
