Unfortunately light wouldn’t remain collimated over a 33 million light year distance which is what we would need to see dinosaurs

No that’s not how light works. It’s not 20 years either direction otherwise you could use your bathroom mirror to see into the future

Technology@lemmy.world•Youtube AI filter making it dangerous to watch for people with Epilepsy due to a bugEnglish
82·3 days agoPeople take epilepsy risk a bit far. I mean I get it they don’t want to kill someone but people with epilepsy know how much flickering is required to be a problem and honestly it’s a lot. That flickering would be extremely annoying but it’s not going to be dangerous to me.
Although I must say I’ve never actually seen this issue and I watch a lot of YouTube because of my job which requires me to be on call but not actually doing anything.
There is an issue that YouTube occasionally has where a video will lock up for a couple of seconds and it always locks up at exactly the same point, and always recovers at exactly the same point, but that’s a very rare issue, isn’t flashing so is unlikely to cause epilepsy, and has been around for years now so is nothing to do with AI.

2·4 days agoAnd thanks to the fact that they’ve now brought cryptocurrency into economic calculations, any financial crash will take down cryptocurrencies too. So the one thing that they kind of do actually have a use for, protecting financial assets from economic collapse, will be destroyed as well. Fantastic.
Everyone should probably just start investing in gold or something.

News@lemmy.world•JPMorgan to Allow Bitcoin and Ether as Collateral in Crypto Push
6·4 days agoGot it, don’t invest with JP Morgan.
Why are they doing this this is a seriously stupid idea. “Will need some collateral for this mortgage, but don’t worry we’re perfectly prepared to take this completely unregulated highly fluctuating pseudo currency”. There’s a reason steam stopped accepting cryptocurrency and it’s because it’s unworkable.

Technology@lemmy.world•Bill Gates warns AI will take over most jobs and leave humans working just two days a weekEnglish
4·5 days agoFar be it for me to point out that the “godfather of AI” has a vested interest in AI being seen as more capable than maybe it actually is. But more to the point we know that AI systems like loose on an environment cause absolute chaos and fail disastrously.
There was an experiment a couple of months ago where they tried to get an AI to run a small business and I think at one point it ended up sending emails to the FBI claiming it had been defrauded because a product it ordered didn’t instantly materialise.

12·6 days agoFortunately he isn’t going to build a robot army. His cars can barely follow the road so I can’t imagine his robots would present much in the way of of a threat, except quite possibly in the extent that they would stand on your foot although even then they’d probably fall over.

Technology@lemmy.world•Inside Amazon’s Plans to Replace Workers With RobotsEnglish
1·7 days agoBut that’s the thing, that doesn’t matter. Because as soon as anyone comes along with a policy of introducing universal basic income, it doesn’t matter how entrenched the political establishment are, people will vote for that if they are losing their jobs.
Most countries political systems are not as completely dysfunctional as the US system. It is possible for independence’s and new parties to arise provided there is enough support. Not being made homeless through no fault of your own is a pretty big motivator to change your historical political leanings.

Technology@lemmy.world•Universities are embracing AI: will students get smarter or stop thinking?English
2·7 days agoThe place where I work has recently introduced to AI but I’d be amazed if the staff could become more stupid. They already don’t know what an ampersand is, so I can’t imagine the bar can get any lower, it’s already a tripping hazard.
When they redid the web blockers a couple of days ago it accidentally blocked corporate co-pilot which is the only AI they’re authorised to use (as if it’ll make any difference at all to data protection), the amount of whining I got about it was unbelievable. Why can’t they just go back to doing their job the way that they presumably were doing it before AI?

I have never bought a fridge in my life. When I bought this house the owner just left the current fridge behind it has no branding at all and is basically a white box. The only smart feature it has is that it beeps if you leave the door open (although honestly it’s not really much use since it only starts beeping after 10 minutes which I feel like is too long).
