Come on over to my front porch!
Libraries.
Porch. You have a roof and at least one wall, but you’re outside.

Ah, the third place that is scary and lonely
That’s called community and capitalism stole it from us
The third place has been monetized so heavily you cannot go there.
We need a fourth place.
Can we instead have a good place?
Or at least a medium place
The medium place is tailored for what each individual would consider to be perfectly mediocre, as a consequence it’s also terribly lonely.
Like a bus station!
I’d settle for a different place
I’m pretty sure at this point that this is the bad place, so probably not.
We need a library with loud zones.
That’s just the library on a normal day, at least in my neighborhood. I want a library with actual quiet.
If the entire library is loud, there isn’t a “loud zone”, lol
You have my sympathies tho, you should move to my neighborhood, our library is quiet af. I found a bullet in the parking lot once tho, and that made me really sad.
Wages haven’t kept up so they’ve become unaffordable.
i was in forth place once, there were four of us racing
I was in fourth place once, there were three of us racing.
made a friend along the way? the real treasure
Fourth hole you say? It’s a myth.
I’m an atheist but I joined the universalist Unitarian church and it’s been a great 3rd place for me.
Not an atheist but don’t tend to vibe with sectarian religion. How’s the vibe?
I haven’t looked into it in a long time, but UU was originally more like a social club for deists and the like.
It’s basically “the secular religion.” What if there was a post-Christian church-like place you could go on Sunday and have something analogous to a religious community without being really required to believe any particular thing?
Really interesting how that touches on online gaming communities as a “new” version of the typical third social space, but why not non-gaming social areas? Some may be more anonymous than others and maybe that invalidates it because you’re hidden behind a false identity, and yet I’m been in plenty of communities on BBSes, IRC, and other platforms where the people didn’t know “me”, but they knew my online identity as well as any real life people know me. Just seemed odd, because as a kid and young adult I didn’t hang out at the mall like the others (which was the third space then) but would be found online with my friends there.
Vr chat and discord also exist
Yeah, in my experience, that’s just discord (my specific brand of neurodivergence finds most discord communities too overwhelming tho, unfortunately)
The library!!
Also, the pub. Actually, they should be joined
With shady courtyards!
The Backrooms. Scary AND lonely.
Not that lonely, it gives you friends that even bring dinner
The humble courtyard garden:
Onside?
hobbies
Its a privilege for sure of those with housing space, but entertaining guests in your home, distributing burden and cost, is one way to spend time with people.
But home is where I hide from people
And I don’t like going to other peoples houses because the entire time my brain is screaming “THIS IS WHERE THEY HIDE FROM PEOPLE LEAVE THEM ALONE”
What are you? A cat?
The solution is just standing in the doorway so you’re half in and half out.
