That’s what is complicated with Heinlein. You can see it as him promoting fascism, as Verhoeven has.
But you also can read it as something promoting more healthy politics. Only people willing to put themselves on the line or at least endure some hardships were eligible to participate in politics. Johnny Rico’s parents didn’t want him to enlist as it was not necessary to have political rights if all you wanted was a good life.
If nothing else this policy would have not only prevented CPT Bonespurs from taking office but even that someone like him got a vote.
I do think though Heinlein was unrealistically idealistic with his book. And the movie took an even more pessimistic view than that.

He ended up in the same place, but he thinks he inserted sarcasm into the story when he just couldn’t see it in what he had removed.
Like, there was an entire third race in the books, a middle ground between bugs and humans, and the novel starts with a soldier massacring a village of civilians while his only concern was making sure he used all his explosive before returning because they got yelled at if they didn’t.
Right from the very first page it’s undeniable that Earth is not the good guys in Heinlens’s version. Then it goes to where the movie starts.
Heinlen just 100% stuck to his characters point of view. They didn’t think any of it was evil, so the book doesn’t. Idiots think that means Heinlen didn’t have an issue with it.
The book was always a warning written with fellow military officers in mind as the audience.
I never knew this, but just from watching the movie alone I even thought it was pretty obvious the humans were the bad guys.
The marketing also distorted any coherent message of the movie. I remember seeing the previews as a kid and it was just a cinematic spectacle of space marines slaughtering the bugs “oh and btw there are tits in it” type of vibe.

I enjoyed the book so much and I knew that the author had feelings about this. It wasn’t pro war. It was a response to the dropping of the Atomic bomb. It’s satire but an idiot can’t pick up on it. I loved Zim’s character in the book.

What is it with fascists and uniforms? Especially uniforms like this?
Fascism frequently plays on projection of strength and conformity - uniform is all window dressing to that end. “We look sharp, we look in charge.”
Fascists are weak little pussies and prefer to be told what to do, say, and wear. They think it makes them strong to look and sound like someone they’re not rather than standing up for themselves. Ironic, isn’t it?
Same reason they bully minorities. They only feel strong when they impose themselves on someone they deem weaker. Just like a playground bully, these are immature, selfish adults who never grew up. They can’t think for themselves, they allow others to do it for them and pretend to be strong when they’re the weakest, most pathetic pieces of shit around.
They build nothing, they contribute nothing, and they deserve nothing but contempt and utter shame if not worse for the harm they commit on us all because they can’t grow up and look outside of themselves.
Fun fact this is why I wear a Czech military field jacket as my daily jacket. Nobody else is wearing that shit near me and I get to wear the neat patches I’ve collected most of which are admittedly from Fallout. Also it pisses random stupid people off for reasons of stolen valor, the Czech Republic patch is still there my accent is distinctly hickish, and I purposely avoid any American military or NASA patches I do have. Plus above all else it keeps my pale ass from burning under the Mojave sun while also breathing quite well.
If anyone knows where to get a non military equivalent of a Czech field jacket from 2010 I’m all ears, ideally it’s still be earthen tone just not camo. Also if anyone knows where to get a desert equivalent of Castros hat that’d be far more useful in the more immediate.

I’m aware - but there aren’t any illustrations of uniforms in the novel, so they certainly riffed off the movie.
