Trumps’s order affects the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which sets the standards for official U.S. maps.
Google Maps has changed the name of “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America” for U.S. users to reflect President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the lake, according to a Google statement.
Trump announced on Thursday that he was changing the name of the smallest of the five Great Lakes, part of an escalating trade feud with Canada that has prompted the two countries to impose reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.
The president’s order affects the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), which sets the standards for official U.S. maps. It does not have any impact on Canadian naming conventions or how the rest of the world refers to the lake.
Reminder that a lot of German businesses were happy to bend the knee to the Nazis.
It’s important to remember that Google was not required in any shape or form to make this change. They simply decided that they’d prefer to continue sucking Trump’s mushroom cock and make the change.
Stop using Google products. Also, remember this, if the fascists ever lose power. Remember that they were happy and excited to jump in bed with the fascist pedophiles, because they’ll likely try to bury their actions during this administration and try to appeal to whoever is in power afterwards.
The US tech giants are the IG Farben and Krupp of MAGA.
That reference is a little too “inside baseball” for me, but based on the context, I assume those were companies that operated in the so-called Third Reich?
And massively profited from it, yes. And still exist today in one way or another.
Really? I was under the impression that Trump had made it a law or something. If not, then what did that executive order actually do?
The EO changed the name on official government maps. Private companies don’t need to adopt those changes. At one point Google even stated its policy was to use the name in common usage rather than pushing updates based on arbitrary changes by a neighboring ruler.
Executive orders only apply to the executive branch of the federal government, which is why they’re called executive orders. They don’t (or rather, are not supposed to) apply to anything else, including citizens and private companies.
(or rather, are not supposed to)
That’s the big problem here.
People acting on Trump’s demands who aren’t supposed to.
Trying to find more Google services I can unsubscribe from…
Whatever… what about the epstein files?
They’re now renamed to America files.
Okay so about the contents of those America files…
i think it’s lake america only to american ips. try with a vpn and private tab
nope its incorrectly named on a canadian ip
Fuck google forever.
How did we elect an octegenarian toddler to the president’s office?
Decades of unchecked racism.
Don’t forget gutting the public education system (a process that was made easier by leveraging unchecked racism).
That’s really the biggest one, destroying education.
Deciding education is only for those who can pay is definitely one of the biggest crumbled pillars that sent us down a slope.
Low IQ and morally devoid conservatives/regressives who treat politics like sports and their fellow Americans like enemies.
*again
I gave mapquest a chance because of this. I loved the UI but Sadly they had the restaurant I wanted to go to marked on the wrong building. Fuck google. To all the laid off Google map devs please use your skills to help make an alternative.
Sadly, making accurate maps isn’t about skills so much as access to lots of high-accuracy data. The reason Google maps are so good is because they’re constantly pulling in fresh data from phone telemetry.
Reminds me of the time someone dragged a wagon of cheap Android phones to a sidewalk and it claimed there was a traffic jam. LOL
Check out CoMaps. It relies on OpenStreetMap, which also has the correct name. Main downsides are a lack of business info, so it’s more difficult/impossible to find somewhere to eat, and no traffic data.
The best feature is that it’s completely offline, you download everything to your device as you desire. No stupid squares to select and download like in Google Maps. I have the entire US on my phone, and don’t need internet to navigate using that data.
I just downloaded CoMaps today to replace Google Maps as my default. One unexpected benefit is that they mapped the driveway to my apartment building and now directions lead to it rather than the street address.
I think that’s just good luck though as the driveway happened to end up closer to the centroid than any other driving paths. I see an open issue to use marked “entrance” points for routing which could allow people to specify where the right place to target would be.
I wonder what it feels like to wield enough power to force a 4.22 trillion dollar company to bend the knee?
Keep sucking that orange shriveled pecker, Pichai. We see you.
Makes you really wonder exactly how many Alphabet, Inc. executives are in the files.
Makes me assume every last one is.
Some were probably too lame, like Musk, to warrant inclusion in the pervert gatherings.
So uhh, can we rename the country to ‘pedophile states of America’ for Canadian users then?
Fucking cowards.
nah, sergei brin and the other one whom i can’t remember MUST make another billion dollars. How do you expect them to do that if they piss off the orange toddler?
Maybe it’s time to get rid of all my google apps.
you mean it wasn’t before?
I thought I was being paranoid dropping Google like a hot dog turd around 2018, but everything they’ve done since then has made me glad I’m no customer of theirs for the most part.
Yup. I was a massive Google fan. I dropped them over a decade ago.
I’m glad I stopped buying their phones. It’s very easy not to since I like emulation and they don’t use Snapdragon SoCs anymore lol
I’m sure google maps will be among the first to kiss his ass again. (or suck dick, whichever you prefer. verbally, I mean) Without any prodding.
Not that I was taking any risk predicting that.
Use Openstreetmap! (edit: any OSM-based app/site).
Also recommend CoMaps; like OSM it’s open source and privacy focused, no ads, very customizable. I prefer the cleaner interface of CoMaps but anything is better than Google.
It, too, uses OSM.
Practically any non-Google map app does.
Nice work. And thanks for the tip!
I switched to Mapquest yesterday. I should have done it a long time ago.
OpenStreetMap still showing Lake Ontario.
