The biggest problem with a censorship proof decentralized social media platform is that the instances without moderation inevitably attract the sorts of people that get banned from everywhere else.

I did the exactly same for the same reason. I think Zorin is well made and great for someone who is not good with computer, but it is probably too simple for someone who is advanced enough to know what Linux is.

These days I recommend Kinoite or Bazzite for someone looking to ditch Windows; but they’re so similar the only question is if they’re planning on gaming with a controller.

For newbies ditching windows I like to recommend the Kinoite version of Fedora, it’s immutable and basically impossible to break, and apps are installed from the “app store” so it’s super easy for someone to understand.

Yes exactly, my potentially hot take is that twenty years from now we’ll look at immutability as the tipping point that sent Linux mainstream on desktop.

I think Fedora Kinoite is the best distro for someone coming from Windows due to KDE’s flexibility and similarity to Windows and it’s immutability. Default Ubuntu is great for people familliar with MacOS, and it can even be themed to be basically indistinguishable.

I have been extremely disappointed with the broader Linux ““community”” at times, but never Linux.

This was my exact journey, though I eventually landed on immutable Fedora with KDE. Zorin is a great OS but it’s in a weird space because it’s probably already too simple for anyone who knows what Linux is.

Fedora has two immutable distros KDE (Kinoite) and GNOME (Silverblue) and both are excellent and very stable.

No love lost for IBM but I still wouldn’t expect to see casually mentioned alongside Palantir.

I think we’ll continue to see incremental gains for a long time, especially as normies abandon desktops/laptops entirely and the entire market shrinks. Windows will probably continue to dominate in enterprise for long past when it’s fashionable.
