SSN’s aren’t something that are shared with others that often though. Mostly in banking/credit/medical/legal. Medical and gov probably isn’t allowed to sell that info, so it makes me wonder who is.
Considering the amount of identity fraud in the US, it amazes me that a data broker not only has the info, but is allowed to sell it.
I was once asked for my SSN number for a new phone at the mall. I just stared at the guy until he only asked for the last 4 digits. I still wasn’t exactly happy about it, but at least I wasn’t speaking the whole number out load at a fucking mall.
The USA doesn’t have laws against collecting people’s personal information. Companies have been quietly taking advantage of this for decades.
