The bill would require companies like Amazon to directly employ the people who deliver their packages while also creating a licensing system that would hold the companies to new safety, training, and labor standards. It has the backing of Mayor Zohran Mamdani and 31 of the council’s 51 members—enough for it to pass if brought to a vote. Supporters of the bill say it would increase street safety while also providing better protection for the workers who deliver Amazon packages.
Good. I’m sick of this “oh you’re not an employee we just treat you like one” nonsense.
The place I work abuses “contractors” like that. Full time responsibility, but less pay and no benefits.
Everyone does now, it’s ridiculous. “You’ll be hired full time in one year” my ass.
Amazon has put so much money to run ads in nyc lobbying against this. More than half my YouTube ads refer to this telling me that as a small business I’ll be screwed out of 2 days shipping and that prices will go up.
My elderly parents are also getting ads that they’re medications won’t be delivered on time because of this new law and they’re going to have their lives at risk.
Idk what catered ads other people are getting, but you can see the money is there and this is something a big corporation taking advantage of the working class doesn’t want to happen.
I really hope this proposition goes through.
Free two-day shipping is one of the most underrecognized 21st-century catastrophes.
100% there is absolutely no reason for it.
It’s destroyed consumer expectations too. Small independent businesses can’t afford that, and people get pissed about real shipping costs when it’s not coming from your local Chinese factory proxy warehouse.
More than half my YouTube ads refer to this telling me
Hey Doc, why tf are you getting YT ads? It’s been about 10 years since I’ve seen one. Block that shit.
U-Block + FireFox = GTG!
I get this sick pleasure with corporations wasting money showing me ads when I will never buy their stuff.
I thought it was just me!
Also how would I know which companies invest money in ads instead of good products?
I trust the mayor to get things done, here’s hoping it spreads nation wide.
I was an Amazon delivery driver and it’s a rat race between contractor companies where if you’re too slow your contract gets terminated.
Except these “contractors” have to use Amazon’s app, Amazon’s warehouse, and custom Amazon delivery vans. If their contract gets terminated there’s just no more company.
The ultra wealthy managed to spread a lot of doubt about a wealth tax in California. If targeting one corpo works better, that might be the play moving forward. Divide and conquer while hoping the ultra rich do not exhibit class solidarity.
