Cops don’t investigate anymore. They jump to conclusions, ignore evidence, escalate the situation until they’ve beaten it half to death, then go for coffee and donuts. Should’ve just gone for the coffee and donuts in the first place.
…and then the DA backs them up by grossly overcharging in order to intimidate everyone into plea-bargaining, whether they’re guilty or not. And even the court procedures themselves structurally incentivize pleading guilty for small offenses just because if you plead not guilty they make you show up to separate court dates for arraignment, transfer to a different court (because so many people plead that the first court isn’t even set up to hold trials anymore) and arraignment again, finally the actual trial, etc.
When the courts have pretty much unanimously agreed that anything up to murder is on the table with no penalties, there is no incentive for them to even try to pretend to do their jobs properly, imo.
Occasionally, if it’s really bad, they’ll throw us a bone and pretend to give a shit about the rule of law, but, pretty rare at this point.
