Recent security tests of a minivan jointly manufacutred by Chinese companies JAC and Huawei were enough to terrify potential buyers. In three live tests, the bracket mounting the brake pedal to the van’s frame snapped.
The test video was heavily shared on Chinese social media platforms like WeChat, Douyin and Bilibili. It was the worst possible news for the responsible firms.

But within 24 hours, the video had disappeared from Chinese platforms such as Bilibili, and several related online posts and reports had vanished too. Viewers on WeChat Video were informed the video could not be played due to an unspecified “violation.” The case prompted discussion of the benefits and limits of consumer reporting in China — a vibrant consumer society with some of the world’s strictest controls on information.

Many suspected Huawei, suggesting the tech giant, which has a growing interest in automated driving systems and other car technology, had applied pressure. Some went even further, speculating that the powerful Huawei was being shielded by authorities.
These questions were deepened by the disappearance of other critical posts. Among these was a post made on the WeChat public account Xinjiang Release (新疆发布), run by the government information office in China’s northwestern Xinjiang region. The post faulted Maextro for failing to address the real safety concerns head on, instead resorting to the citation of complex technical standards. It was called, “Can You Speak Like a Human When Responding to Product Safety Concerns?”

Censorship like this is disgusting. Being able to disappear information on a whim is a power no one should wield.
Oh hey can anyone find a copy of that “Musk” movie for me? Any copy? A shitty cam rip on an arrrr site? An IRC room? A shitty upside-down YouTube video? Peertube? Usenet? Tattooed on a fat guy’s stomach?
Thank goodness the Benevolent Socialist People’s Censors are here to protect us simple minded workers from such dangerous counterrevolutionary information we would not understand. 🙈🙉🙊
Yes, I see the will of the people is once again being reflected in the actions of the bureaucrats…

Further proof that “Chinese social medial” isn’t “social media”.
As if facebook, reddit, twitter, instagram are any better…
Even Lemmy sometimes doesn’t qualify for being a social media
The level of co-ordination is not even remotely comparable. If you make a post that embarrasses a big company or the state on Western social media, it usually stays up. They rarely intervene. Meanwhile in China, you have the entire state apparatus coming as one unified force after popular posts to shut down this type of talk.

Are we using reddit?
No, but they are
Is it not obvious how much worse it is for the state to be enforcing opaque controls on all platforms versus shitty management of a company doing so?
Don’t get me started on meta… but that would be another conversation.

Thank you for further highlighting my point.
lmao
I mean, lots of comments vanish from Lemmy.
Don’t post on .ml then.
While I appreciate an ML joke, it’s usually from world, SJW, etc. the “centrists”
And whenever I go looking, it’s trolls, dog whistles, or outright slurs. This place is way too hot for any actual centrist I know.
Especially on the pro-China servers.
Humorously, it’s all anti-Trump stuff that gets moderated on American servers. Apparently I might incite change with my words. Oooooo scary
or the lib/fasch ones

absolutely. I’m absolutely a multi level Maoist. would you like to sell some pig iron for me?
Is that the vehicle where 1 out of every 3 had the brake pedal snap off when pressing it too hard?
did it disapear from the testing agency that did it? Last I saw was this and it seemed to be testing done in china for a place that does this kinda thing. https://www.thedrive.com/news/chinese-ev-brake-pedal-snaps-three-times-during-testing

Do you understand that this kind of whaboutism is particularly revealing as this Waymo video, unlike the Chinese JAC/Huawei case, is still visible on the web? Do you understand that the story isn’t just about the crash but about the censorship of a testing video that is endangering people’s lives?
