With the climate crisis and diseases threatening one of the world’s most popular fruits, researchers are hoping a breakthrough in breeding techniques could give the Cavendish banana a certain future
Iirc, the same fungus that decimated the Big Mike plantations mutated into the one that’s taking out the Cavendish. (Big Mike is still out there, btw, but only in limited areas that didn’t get infected with the blight, and in limited numbers. You know how in all the old movies, people slipped on banana peels? Those were Big Mike; supposedly the peels actually were a hazard, though perhaps not to the extent Bugs Bunny might imply.)

You ever step on a Cavendish banana peel? They’re surprisingly slippery. I put only a little weight on one once and still nearly slipped.
