Student told the university’s police department that assault by two men occurred in August during a night of drinking

A sorority member at the University of Arizona has alleged she was sexually assaulted by two men at a fraternity house during a night of drinking in late August.

The student told the university’s police department that she consensually kissed one of the men at one point while at the Sigma Phi Epsilon house on 26 August but doesn’t remember agreeing to sex, according to search warrant records posted Monday night by KOLD-TV in Tucson.

The sexual assault allegations surfaced two weeks after the university had suspended activities for its 21 fraternities amid reports of misconduct, including assault, hazing and drug- and alcohol-related behavior. Suspensions on all but five fraternities have since been lifted after they had mandatory meetings with the dean of students.

Not American so I have no idea what this means? I don’t suppose this has anything to do with Greece?

Not the commenter you responded to, but while you’re absolutely right that it’s not just Greek System men, they are in a unique position where they have a certain amount of historic and administrative power, sometimes have their houses as part of the campus, have collective resources even beyond their individual school, have a demonstrated culture of circling the wagons, have power over the social and living situation of their members, and also take literal oaths of secrecy and brotherhood. It’s taking the same toxic masculinity that all young men are learning to deal with, and building a fortress around it.

The Greeks need to go, or at least have as much of that pared away as possible, starting with the special treatment by and access to the campuses’ levers of power.

Nobody said ‘only’. The other hotspots of rape (and rapists in general) absolutely also need to go.

no. but they are a distilled and highly efficient implementation of the rape culture.

You should look at the sports teams. However bad you think it is at fraternities, in the teams’ houses, it’s worse. And they have the full protection of the university.

yes. for sure. i dont disagree that multiple things can be true. the focus right now is greek life. but the “theme” or essence of the problem is indeed colleges in general!
