Forget sleepmaxxing and cold plunging: smoking is the new lifestyle flex among AI researchers.

At least, that’s according to Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar, who said some AI researchers are taking up smoking to signal their belief that AI will eventually cure cancer.

“So many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI,” Sankar said in an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

Magic. These people believe in magic.

We already know how to cure many forms of cancer. Many people have survived cancer and continued to live long healthy lives. Even better: we know how to prevent cancer! Like not smoking. But there’s never going to be a simple painless pill that immediately cures all forms of cancer, because cancer doesn’t work like that. No disease does. Cancer is not a single disease, but an entire class of diseases, like viral infections or bacterial infections.

Sounds like someone got stressed and started smoking, and then turned it into a joke about believing AI will cure my cancer anyway. Then it snowballed in idiotic fashion into this comment by a MBA penny counter.

That isn’t how humans make decisions. This CTO is so divorced from reality he really thinks people would start smoking just because their lung cancer might be cured?

The small issues like smell, reduced lung capacity, cough, and cost are the main reasons people don’t smoke. Lung cancer is too distant, too uncommon for it to factor in many people’s initial risk calculation

I clicked the article to be sure, but I knew what the headline meant:

So many AI researchers have started smoking as a way of signaling to other researchers how much they believe in AI," Sankar said in an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

The logic, he said, is: "I believe so much in AI that it’s going to cure cancer. So I’m showing you my chips are all in."

That’s exactly how humans make decisions…

A bunch of the ones doing it, probably hate it.

It’s something they’re doing to show the cult in group that they firmly believe in the future of AI. It’s like ritual scarification almost. It’s not that they always wanted to smoke but thought it was dangerous, they’re starting to show that they’re so devoted to getting AI there, that they’re risking their own lives.

Don’t forget, these people work at AI companies, ran by AI techbrod obsessed with health and longevity. To them, someone that casually starts smoking because “AI will fix cancer” is who they’re gonna hire over someone who says “maybe we shouldnt burn our planet down for billionaires”.

All the people at these companies start trying to one up each other, because being devoted to the dream of AI gets you promotions.

None of this is unusual, you’re problem is you think “logical” means it’s a good idea. Whats happening here is logical, you’re just not identifying with who these people are, what their motivations, and how a separated group will quickly become more extreme to differentiate internally.

Absolutely no one who knows anything about sociology or psychology would be surprised by this.

Maybe they’re just trying to open up new revenue streams - ones that have already been shown to be profitable, like peddling nicotine addiction? I’m waiting for the ads for Claude Smokes. And for the ladies we’ll have Gemini Slims. The ads can be shot in the AI datacenters with the actors lighting-up off GPU heatsinks.

I have no problem with palantir employees doing this. AI can solve all of these medical problems. These palantir folks could also give themselves rabies to prove how wrong we all are about AI, and how right and smart they are. Where do we source some rabies?

But it’ll never cure the horrible smell that appalls everyone. It’ll never cure the horrible cough and the fatigue and the stiffness of your chest when you do any sort of sports. Let them, though. Darwinism is good.

They believe that AI will cure the second part. Hell, they might think it’ll solve everything with a GMO tobacco plant.
