As far as I know, it’s because American eggs are required to be washed and sterilized whereas European eggs are the exact opposite, they are left unwashed. Both are perfectly fine, you just need to know to wash them before eating them in Europe. apparently you don’t need to wash them in Europe, just don’t eat the shell 🍳

Washing breaks the natural anti-bacterial barrier of eggs, leaving them prone to salmonella, and they have to be refrigerated to avoid contamination.

I have no idea why they do this.

Because washing the eggs allows you to cover up the fact that the hens are crammed so tight that the eggs are covered in shit by the time they’re collected.

Making it illegal to wash the eggs forces farmers to maintain some semblance of sanitary conditions.

They’re often crammed very tight in Europe as well, but it depends on the type of egg you buy.

Having a tiny bit of shit on it is uncommon, and people understand that it’s going to happen sometimes with a natural product that comes out of a chicken’s ass.

Battery cages are illegal in the EU, and the minimum provision for caged hens is 750cm^2 per bird.

The US has no such law, but “industry standard” is 430 to 550cm^2 per bird.

the billboard is probably referring to growth hormones. some other companies do the same claim in their marketing… but growth hormones have been banned in that industry in the u.s. since like the 1950s.
