Thing is, many of these things grow over time, and - especially with the active gutting of regulatory and oversight bodies - there’s a decent chance that the list isn’t comprehensive.
It’s also one of the reasons why I have avoided US meat products and grabbed stuff with a maple leaf instead, because it wasn’t hard to see this coming (and coming and coming)
You need to set your comfort level where it suits you, sure. However best to go into this informed with the actual available data. I’m not a vegetarian, but excessive meat waste really makes me cringe. Agree for future purposes, as with everything - avoid buying American (US) whenever possible.

The FDA link in the article lists the product labels affected. I thinks it’s all labeled “A&D Foods” and has “EST. 1363” on the label. It all went to a distributor in Georgia.

This is not because of deregulation, this is because Star Meat Delivery attempted to avoid inspection by falsely labeling their meat as inspected.
The active regulatory body discovered it, and as it wasn’t inspected, the rule is immediate Class I.
While im all for blaming the GOP on deregulation, deregulation did not enable this. Regulation issued the recall.
It’s because Star Meat Delivery had assumed the deregulation progress was further along than it actually was and thought Trump’s USDA would let them get away with it.
If we had proper regulation, there would not have been 167000lbs of this shit to recall.
This is not ‘oh, the regulation works or it doesn’t’, humans like to do that a lot for some reason, this whole ‘it’s either one thing or the other’. Nuance and gradients are a real thing. This would not have happened in a robust regulatory environment. The one we have operates on shoe strings.

Great context! While the recall shouldn’t be ignored, 167k is indeed a teeny tiny amount of beef that only that specific GA market should worry about.
By my cowboy calculations the domestic beef packers produce about 400 million pounds of beef per week. 140m of that is trim for ground beef and another 120m are beef cuts. Rest is organ meat and bones.
Your local Sysco chews through more beef than this in a day.

The average person in the US eats ~330g of meat per day. multiplied by 350 million people is ~11.5 billion grams, which is around 254 million pounds of meat per day. This recall is about 0.066% of the daily meat consumption in the US.
