It is so extremely irresponsible to conflate Jews and Israel, in the name of fighting antisemism no less. In my opinion this should be the biggest hammer to bash centrists on the head with every time they do shit like this: their lack of seriousness and their irresponsible political conduct. Mélenchon has been particularly good at doing this, regardless his other flaws.
Mélenchon, the guy who said that the Jews killed Jesus? That antisemtism is not a problem in France? That Zemmour said what he said because he reproduced Jew cultural scenarii? Nah, he has a lot of qualities, but he’s not good on this subject.
Hmm, I’m not one to give leftists a pass for antisemic statements, but having looked up a bit the context, I think you’re misrepresenting Mélenchon’s actual words, putting them in the worst possible light, where a good faith reading of his statements would place them in the “unfortunate wording of a somewhat valid point” that Mélenchon actually apologized for afterwards.
The “Jews killed Jesus” incident apparently was him trying to make a point about Macron being attacked internally and that sometimes members of your own group turn on you. So it wasn’t about calling Jews christ-killers, it was a bad use of a trope that he should have known to not use, and for which he apologized.
He also didn’t say that antisemitism isn’t a problem, he said it’s residual in France, which, you know, means it’s still there. He did minimize the issue, that’s true, but we do live in an environment like the one described in the OP article where antisemitism is used very irresponsibility.
The Zemour thing is also kind of weird? He was trying to defend Zemour, who’s a Jewish french nationalist, against an accusation of antisemitism by saying that his conservatism is part of how Judaism has survived over the centuries. He then also apparently subsequently admitted he expressed himself poorly.
So, overall, this all looks to me less like an antisemite and more like someone who runs his mouth a bit more than he should. It is perfectly reasonable however to criticize him for his own irresponsibility and for the hurtful nature of his comments.
That said, my argument is not that he’s really good at “handling antisemitism” (these cases obviously prove he sucks at it). My point was that he’s good at calling out centrist irresponsibility and lack seriousness in general, eg when it comes to the economy. He’s an example of how I think the left should attack the centre, not an example of how the left should talk about antisemitism. Je me suis mal exprimé comme Mélenchon évidemment.
my argument is not that he’s really good at handling antisemitism
I was saying nothing more than that he’s bad at handling antisemitism. I don’t think he is antisemitic, but by his unfortunate words (fueled by the fact that he downplays the strength of antisemitism in France and in French left) he normalizes, unwillingly, antisemitism.
Yea that’s fair.
He is a terrible choice for a progressive political movement, that’s for sure
There will never be a perfect person to lead a progressive movement, there are only those imperfect people who take up the mantle. If ever you’re dissatisfied with your choices you should consider taking up the mantle yourself.
“We support the mass murdering of children of “vermin” ethnicities when done by people from ethnicities we deem worthy”
– Germany’s “centrists”
(Pretty much also the NAZIs)
“Speak out against genocide, enduced famine, torture, ethnic cleansing, murder of rescue workers and journalists, bombing of schools and hospitals, concentration camps, rape, and other war crimes, and we will deem you enemy of the state!”
How come Germany is still wildly attracted to their horrible crimes against humanity during the second world war?
“We learned from our mistakes. Jews are not the unhuman vermin that needs to be eradicated, Palestinians are. Sorry we had it wrong the first time.”
How come Germany is still wildly attracted to their horrible crimes against humanity during the second world war?
IMHO, because the pushback against that mindset did not came from the inside, it came from the outside.
It was not the Germans who rebelled against and overthrew the NAZIs, it was foreigners who came over and overthrew them.
So it’s not all that unsurprising that the even whilst they hid the swasticas and stopped the goose-stepping, the foundational mindset remained the same.
It probably didn’t help that the dominant power in the Allies - the United States - were also (and still are, to quite an extent) extremely racist.
For a while they were known as this.
That’s clearly not how most of the German elites think.
I’ve never heard of Die Linke and just the context of the headline tells me everything. The so-called liberals are siding with fascists against people who want an affordable cost of living, aren’t they?
Die Linke are left of center (not even very left) and probably one of the very few major parties that says “hey, maybe there are some war crimes happening in Gaza” (not even agreement on the genocide). And for that, they’re labelled as antisemites.
nobody’s denying war crimes, but yes reasonable people are very careful with their rhetoric.
German leaders deny war crimes.
In December 2024, after Amnesty International released a report accusing Israel of genocide, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Sebastian Fischer stated that “genocide presupposes a clear intention to eradicate an ethnic group. I still do not recognize any such clear intention.”
Merz criticised the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes during the Gaza war. In February 2025, one day after the 2025 German federal election, he announced his intention to invite Netanyahu to Germany, “as an open challenge” to the decision of the ICC.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/12/7/what-has-germanys-position-been-on-israels-genocide-in-gaza
Merz emphasised that Germany could no longer ignore the worsening toll on Gaza civilians while continuing to support what he described as Israel’s “right to defend itself” and the need for the release of captives held by Hamas.
i wrote “reasonable” in the context of the Linke party, certainly not Merz.
I’m sorry, I don’t speak to genocide denialists and you are in no position to define what “reasonable” means.
No reasonable people have been calling it a genocide for a long time, downplaying the intent to erase the Palestinian people is genocide denial.
They have targeted every hospital & cultural center, it’s clearly intentional erasure of Palestinian, even if it’s not the goal to litterally kill every Palestinian… Yet
yes, i remember pamphletes from the 70’s (just shortly after the replacement of the Egypt and Jordanian occupiers of what was supposed to form Palestine by Israel) where that new occupation was described as genocidal. afaict the Palestinian population grew ever since. so, if there’s really such intent as you imagine, “they” just haven’t learned from the Germans how to do it properly.
you should also clearly condemn the installation of military installations close to civil infrastructure. i think building beneath such also qualifies as war crime. maybe you get the supposed targeting motivation right then as well.
you should also clearly condemn the installation of military installations close to civil infrastructure.
Have you seen where the IDF puts it’s military installations?
i remember pamphletes from the 70’s (just shortly after the replacement of the Egypt and Jordanian occupiers of what was supposed to form Palestine by Israel) where that new occupation was described as genocidal.
Yeah, some people were ahead of the curve on realizing that Israel was a genocidal project to ethnically cleanse Palestine.
afaict the Palestinian population grew ever since.
Just an insane argument to make, Holocaust deniers make the same argument about Jewish population growth in the Jewish Ghettos the Nazis created
Only political party with seats in the Bundestag which doesn’t unwaveringly supports child mass murders because of their race.
The goose-stepping and the swasticas might have been forcefully taken away from Germans by foreigners, but the viewing of race as something that that’s more important than everything else, even the lives of innocents, was never expunged from the German spirit.
Germans are mean dumbasses, no doubt, but also they have updated their racism to culturally connotated ressentment as they have shifted from antisemitism to antizionism decades ago.
Basically plagiarism at this point. Centrists tried to call Bernie Sanders an antisemite ffs. Just power through it, stay on message, don’t give them the time of day.
Anecdotally I know a German that completely shuts up like a clam as soon as there is any talk criticizing Israel. My guess is the subject is still extremely toxic in Germany.
IMO that kind of social inability to debate an issue is what feeds parties like AfD.
We had something similar here in Denmark, it used to be socially unacceptable to criticize immigration, and the result was that we got a new party with the exclusive goal to prevent immigration, and at their height they achieved 20% of the vote for parliament.
The main reason they have dropped since, is that the other parties began to actually adopt some of their policies. 🤥😳I don’t see how Jews could be seen as a big political problem in Germany, so the centrists are probably exploiting social stigma, and that stigma is in itself harmful, and centrists exploiting it will only pave the way even more for AfD.
It’s insane that some people consider it antisemitism to criticize Israel’s genocide in Palestine.
Am German, your guess is correct. As soon as anything goes it that direction it’s all blamed as antisemitism and you should know your Erbschuld.
Basically, as Merz said, we’re fully supporting Israel. And that’s also one of the things causing more and more issues and gap between politics and reality here.
For the record, as a German I do remember the lessons we learned from our grisly past: That genocide is evil and that it’s very easy for a country to sink into utter barbarism. I wish we could take the principled stand we owe to our past victims and condemn Israel for its actions.
Unfortunately, that’s just what the German people learned. German politicians apparently learned from our past that our mistake was to genocide the wrong people and to lose the war.
From the outside it really feels like the German elites, including its political class, might have been forced by outsiders to hide their swastikas and stop loudly shouting certain slogans, but their hearts remained in the same place and their “values” the same.
“We made a mistake and this race were not untermenschem but rather ubermeschen like us” is a lot easier to accept than it is to turn ones entire morality upside down and accept that people and the way they should be treated is not determied by race and thus they personally (as “Arians”) are not inherently superior.
Certainly this explains why the “making amends” after WWII and the Holocaust was an almost entirelly racialized thing rather than being about the actual victims and how that should never be done to anybody (the race-agnostice people-centric Humanist view) and why not all ethnic groups with large numbers of victims in the Holocaust got the same treatment (specifically the Romani - over 250000 of whom were murdered in the Holocaust and who were targetted for extermination - don’t get anywhere the same treatment as the Jewish People).
In light of their reaction to the Israeli Genocide in Gaza, the heavy stink of Racism from the German elites is becoming very clear and its roots in History seem obvious.
Tja nun.
Supporting Israel is making the same mistake twice.
To make it a little more nuanced let’s say that supporting genocide is doing it again.
The whole supporting of a nation because of the race of its people is the morality of Racists and Supremacists.
You could say that’s the original sin in what Germany is doing now.
From that moral posture of one’s race justifying unwavering support no matter how horrible one’s actas to ending up supporting genocide as long as a “good” race is doing it to a “bad” race, is a much smaller step, especially in Germany where there’s a lot of practice in doing exactly that.
HR has asked you to find the differences in these images.
Because it’s really easy to get stuck on one event, and then consider it “over” and not learn anything to carry over the next time.
In Germany they actually teach school children about the atrocities of WW2 exactly to try to prevent them from happening again.
So they don’t just consider them “over”, very far from it!Oh I know what they teach, but clearly there’s quite a few who seem to have learned the wrong lesson.
Außerdem deutlich älter als Nazis vom Begriff her.
That’s exactly what the centrists are doing here in Sweden too. The left grew a decent chunk this election and the centre refuses to cooperate.
Centrists will sooner cooperate with the far-right than with the left. That’s where their true allegiances lie.
Oh, absolutely! I never really grasped why they call themselves the centre party because they’re hyper capitalists. I guess it’s because while they are hyper capitalists, they also care about the rural communities. Well… the exploitation of the rural communities.
The party leader for the longest time was this brilliant thinker

This is, to be fair not what she said. What she actually said was
In Sweden, since a very long time back, it’s forbidden to engage in business with a criminal intent, and that is the way it still is, and continue to be going forward.
I think the above image is a decent example of reductio ad absurdum. A quote from something she wrote in Göteborgsposten reads
This summer I read Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged and was enraptured. The book is in a class of its own, the best I’ve ever read. It gripped me, it touched me, and it broadened my horizons. (lit: made the thought grow)
Which, uh… is an absolutely wild thing to say about Atlas Shrugged.
I’ve never managed to read the entirety of Atlas Shrugged, it is a stodgy piece of literature, and mostly just serves as a vessel for Rand’s sermons about her beliefs about society. A way to indoctrinate people into her cult.
The book makes so much sense when you realise who Ayn Rand is. She is a child of rich bourgeoisie parents, who lost their riches and had to flee their home due to war. She is the epitome of “temporarily embarrassed millionaire”, a spoiled, scared refugee child, who knows that knew that she deserves better. She just never grew beyond the mindset of that scared girl whose entire known world collapsed around her.
The coolest and most thought provoking thing about Atlas Shrugged is the title. It’s one banger of a title, really wasted on the work to which it is attached.
Sooo many criticisms of Atlas Shrugged! The irony is that Rand ended up being broke and living off the goodwill of others and social services - the same type of “socialism” that she advocated against for decades.
That’s because in her worldview, she was morally good and so deserving of it. She was born rich, and then bad people took her family’s money so she was, per her definition, what we now jokingly say “temporarily embarrassed millionaire.”
She makes it super clear in her book that (morally) good people have money, the fact that they possess money means that they’re (morally) good, equally so, good people are beautiful. You can’t be a beautiful evil rich person, because if you’re rich and beautiful you’re automatically good.
It’s a nonsensical idea, for obvious reasons, but that’s ultimately what her objectivism idea was about.
Later in life she had a meltdown when her protege/almost-son-lover Nathaniel Branden rejected her sexual advances because he wasn’t into her anymore. It became a whole big thing. She was the Ayn Rand, he had to be attracted to her because she was the face of objectivism, and good people are automatically attracted to other good people. Thus she cast him down because if he wasn’t attracted to her he’s not a good objectivist.
It’s such a dumb cult.
Lol! This additional context is really adding spicy tea to my morning coffee.
It truly makes you question the intelligence (and sanity) of every person who says they like that book.
Honestly, I think most people who are big fans haven’t read the book. Like I said, I haven’t read the book fully. It’s s t o d g y and I’d never begrudge anyone for not reading it.
Rand was very anti-homosexuality, which is kind of a stark contrast to how homoerotic the book is. There are also a lot of places where characters will enter a long speech, and this can last for dozens of pages. I think Galt’s radio speech is like 70 pages long, it meanders and it repeats not just itself, but previous speeches as well. Then everybody claps.
Like it’s not a good book. Hahaha.
Rather central to her plot is the great man theory. They’re the proverbial Atlas that is shrugging. The core idea is “what if all the great men (capitalists) decided to just stop pushing the world forward.” Her belief is that society is only functioning because rich beautiful good people are there to ensure it moves forward, and all those regular people, the pesky workers and whatnot need these rich people to lead them, because we’re all dumb sheeple who can’t possibly make good decisions.
So eventually all the great men decide that they’re done answering to society, they build a secret town in the mountains in Colorado or something, and there they live in their objectivist utopia, where no one is given anything, all checks are paid and balanced (except in the cases where they’re not), and the outside world just collapses into the stone age.
I think there are people out there who genuinely believe this, that rich men like Musk, Zuck, Amazonman, Gates, and whatnot are literally pushing the world forward. Traditionally our history does often teach that there were great men, visionaries, individuals with grand ideas or inventions, who swooped in and affected great change. Modern historians tend to reject this narrative because these people obviously didn’t live in a vacuum, and oftentimes the contributions of those around them are overlooked.
History has shown again and again, when centrists are forced to chose between left and fashism (right), they chose fashism. All centrists are fashist-enablers.
There is compromise and there is compromised. Fuck, dealing with extremists does no one any good.
