War crime kinda buys into the lie that these are wartime actions. These are crimes against humanity and straight up state-directed murder.
It doesn’t have to be an official war to be a war crime. Vietnam was never a declared war but My Lai was obviously a war crime.
At least 347 and up to 504 civilians, almost all women, children, and elderly men, were murdered by U.S. Army soldiers
Some of the women were gang-raped and their bodies mutilated, and some soldiers mutilated and raped children as young as 12. The incident was the largest massacre of civilians by U.S. forces in the 20th century.
The killing began while the troops were searching the village for guerillas, and continued after they realized that no guerillas seemed to be present. Villagers were gathered together, held in the open, then murdered with automatic weapons, bayonets, and hand grenades; one large group of villagers was shot in an irrigation ditch. Soldiers also burned down homes and killed livestock.
The massacre was originally reported as a battle against Viet Cong troops, and was covered up in initial investigations by the U.S. Army.
Twenty-six soldiers were charged with criminal offenses, but only Lieutenant William Calley Jr., the leader of 1st Platoon in C Company, was convicted. He was found guilty of murdering 22 villagers and originally given a life sentence, but served three-and-a-half years under house arrest after his sentence was commuted.

The leniency of people who do such acts is why we have the world we have now. From the Revolutionary War to The Civil War to the World Wars, going soft on evil results in others finding new and horrific ways to commit evil, knowing they will face little to no consequences.
It is why I advocate for putting ICE on trial as a class, then executing anyone paid for serving as ICE in some capacity. It isn’t great that we can’t put everyone through a full trial, but only 210ish nazis were executed at Nuremberg. Society will need ICE thoroughly removed, else they will continue the Confederacy’s work for centuries to come.

If it’s just Venezuela, then surely these people that are “fishing” know there’s a big ass warship shooting them out of the water if they stray too far from the coast. (I say it in quotes because it just doesn’t add up to me.)

If they are carrying drugs, surely there’s leftover debris that can prove it, that can be retrieved after the fact.
Also yeah, whatever the reason, this is not the way to carry out an operation like this. Immobilize the vehicle, stop them and take them to interpol or whatever maritime authority there is on international waters.
I’ve been wondering the same thing and haven’t seen reporting yet on who the victims are or their families. I figure there’s a decent chance that they are running drugs. Or, at least some of them are.
That being said, I’d totally run drugs if it was the only way to feed my family or they were being threatened. Just like the labor that farms coca, low level workers are mostly ethically blameless in my view.
That shit has to be terrifying, going out in a little boat knowing a military ship may blow you up. Their poor families have to live with the fear as well. Even worse is if they’re doing it under threat.
It’s the whole Pablo Escobar thing, I could give a fuck less if he gets whacked. However, that doesn’t mean some family trying to survive on subsistence farming and growing coca for extra cash deaerves a hellfire missle.
Your last paragraph is the key one here. They could detain, stop and seize and/or turn them back but they are actively choosing to murder them instead. No trial and no evidence beyond “I say so”. This is state sanctioned terrorism. It’s about the fear, the chaos and the domination. It’s not about protecting anyone or preventing anything. The pain and fear is the purpose.
Right, but the people going out must know the risk they are taking at this point right? What is so important that they’re risking their lives with this? None of it adds up for me.
Edit: going out and taking that risk screams doing it under duress. But then there would be evidence right?
There are hundreds or thousands of boats every day, and so far only 17 strikes. They’re willing to play those odds so that they can feed themselves and their families.
I guess I assumed they were the only ones going out that far and taking the risk. But its more likely just the ones that looked more “suspicious” to them with no real positive identification that they are doing anything wrong.
Do you just stop going to work because of workplace shooting? Do you just stop sending your kids to school because of school shootings? Do you stop going to church or the grocery store because some maniac might light it up? Do you stop dating as a woman because you’re most likely to be murdered by the man you’re dating or married to?
But the short answer… poverty! If they’re fishing it’s for work and if they’re running drugs it’s also for work. They’re doing their jobs bc their kids don’t eat if they don’t. Just because someone drives a boat with cargo you don’t agree with doesn’t make them a demon. That’s _if _ these people are doing that which the US government is giving zero legitimate proof of. But even if they are drug runners, it’s work and good paying work, and probably even a bigger payoff now that the US is on a murderous rampage. If you survive the payoff may just be worth it. They’re people. People with families and with needs.
My possibly incorrect assumption is that those boats that got hit were the only ones going that far away. If there are more and these are the only ones randomly getting hit then yeah that’s just terrorism.
