Window unit ACs work well when your windows open by sliding. Most US windows are that way, but UK windows are almost always hinged at the sides or tops which makes mounting a window unit effectively impossible.

So either you have to get an expensive fully plumbed-in unit, or a portable unit that stays inside the room and has vent hoses going out your window. Which are not ideal either.

It’s been the case to now that extreme heat has been rare enough and short enough in duration that everyone has simply dealt with it. When it’s 5 days in a year then you suffer a bit but quickly forget about it afterwards.

But times are changing, and we will have to soon change the way our homes are designed too.

Using workspaces as instantly switchable ‘screens’ also helps make presentations and demos really slick, i find.

You can screen-share the whole monitor and then flick between your deck and code and a browser very cleanly with no window fumbling.

This is the way I always did it on Mac, and now do it on Cosmic.

Almost always I want windows to have the full real-estate of the screen (editor, browser, etc) so tiling rarely makes sense for me and instead I want to be able to rapidly change between windows.

So using whole workspaces as a side-to-side carousel where I can flip back and forth between adjacent ones in a moment has been my go-to workflow for 15 years already.

If huge tech corps are good at anything, it’s swerving around laws or simply deciding to ignore them.

They’ll argue that since you consented, it’s not spying.

And they’ll put something in the terms that it’s your responsibility to inform people around that your or their conversations will be recorded (lol, as if anyone would - but they’ll claim that as a defence).

And if they end up in court and get fined, even millions is just a slap on the wrist compared to how much they made from all that juicy data.

Yep. This one really is just a USB Mass Storage device so it will actually work, but I don’t assume seeing that penguin is guarantee of anything.

If you’re buying something like an m.2 WiFi card and want something that actually works, you still need community opinion - especially if you want kernel support and for it to function without tweaks in the way Windows users have always expected and enjoyed.

I understand why app developers do it, and their motivations are often well-intended - like with making QR scanning more reliable as you mentioned.

It still makes me annoyed, because as far as I’m concerned things at the system level should be under my control, not handed to apps.

My complaint is ideological.

If anything I’m annoyed at Android (=Google) about it, because they could at least put it behind a permission and let the user decide whether to give apps the power, but no - apps can do it whether you consent or not.

Also: apps that control your screen brightness.

This is a game design problem, and it’s on the game to solve it.

Humans are loss-averse and we’ll hold onto rare items forever - if the game allows it.

Make them farmable, at least.

Even better, make them extremely limited in quantity but automatically refreshing when you rest, like an estus flask.

That way not only is there no punishment for using them, but you asolutely should use them - and in fact it’s bad strategy if you died without using them.
