Science Memes@mander.xyz•Just answer the question you fuckin' nerdEnglish
1·4 days agoI mean that is true of basically all structures and materials. It’s just the coastline problem. How long is the coastline? Depends on the level of precision you apply and the exact time you measure. Theoretically it is infinite if you keep getting more and more granular with it. That’s not helpful or meaningful for general purposes though.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Just answer the question you fuckin' nerdEnglish
31·6 days agoThat’s not entirely true. We don’t have just one hole going through us. Our holes branch. We have 3 intakes (2 nostrils, 1 mouth) and 2 outputs (1 anus, 1 urethra). If you simplified us down topographically, it’d be like you formed a donut around a starfish with the arms sticking out and then you just deleted the starfish.

8·6 days agoIs “topologist” a job? Like someone who specializes in telling you how many holes and knots exist in a given object, How to “untie” seemingly knotted things that actually topographically have no knots? Do you clock in for that, or is it a 1099 freelancer thing?

News@lemmy.world•Trump administration will set price floors across range of industries to combat China, Bessent says
31·11 days agoI’m no economist but… how does enforcing a price floor help you to compete with China who already has the market cornered, and does so with lower prices? If my competition has 75% market share to my 10%, the only way I have to make up that difference at all is for demand that they can’t meet to go up (which is out of my control), or to either provide a better product, or give them the same product at a lower price to attract more customers. Setting a price floor just took one of my levers away, and the other lever, product improvement, costs money that I don’t have. So… this is just going to kill competition with China, kill American businesses and give China room to make even more money. Am I missing something?

News@lemmy.world•'Orwellian:' GOP congressman publicly hits back against Stephen Miller
20·14 days agoHe is a cartoonishly villainous figure that stands out even in the crowd of villains in the White House, and he is apparently puppeting the presidency, the attorney general, and the DHS, at least, if not more. Just watched the Some More News deep dive on him and he’s apparently been a slimy racist entitled fuck since childhood.
In this case, I think it was more indoctrination of a rule her dad set that she never questioned.
I had a similar conversation with a friend in college who alleged that waking up after 9am meant that you are lazy. In all cases. Period.
Stayed up until 3am partying with your friends? Better still be up by 9.
Took the Redeye which didn’t land until 5am? Oof, enjoy your few hours remaining but don’t sleep in…
Work a double shift through the night until 8am? Did I fucking stutter, you can only sleep until 9am, you useless fuck!
Idk… seems silly and arbitrary.

News@lemmy.world•Inside Stephen Miller’s Secret Plan to Normalize Trump’s Dictator Rule
9·18 days agoThe fact that this guy can “normalize” anything is incredible to me. He is so cartoonishly villainous that he stands out even in an entire administration of villains. They are all corrupt and authoritarian, but he is so blatantly antagonistic to even basic civil rights and due process, goes even beyond the Unitary Exective Theory into trying to establish the presidency as having autocratic control of the entire federal and state governments (i.e. dictatorship), and has justified much of this on racist fear mongering. The Nazi label is spot-the-fuck-on.

News@lemmy.world•At Saudi Comedy Fest, American Free Speech Becomes the Punchline
20·24 days agoThere’s a few who were invited and turned them down. Mike Birbiglia was the most notable to me, but I’m also familiar with Shane Gillis, Michelle Wolf, and Stavros Halkias. Atsuko Okatsuka, Toni Nagy, Leslie Liao, Nimesh Patel, and Tim Dillon have also announced they turned down the offer, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen their shows.

Wow. This guy thinks the most objectionable thing about him, the only ammo to be used against him, is his drug addiction. This guy has no self awareness at all.
