Since I invariably wind up getting “name suits” types of comments, here’s the explanation behind it:
Around the turn of the millennium, I was trying to come up with a username to use on a particular site that had a shortish character count limit for usernames. My goal was something related to the fact that I would often be making my points in arguments with “holier-than-thou” types by taking what they were saying, and turning it on its head so the offensive stuff was directed back at them.
I also happened to learn shortly beforehand that many years ago “'ape” was somewhat commonly used as a verb to mean “imitate” or “copy.”
I’m sure you can figure the rest out.

Ars has been around since the mid 1990s. Granted the sale to Conde Nast changed them slowly over time, as well as broadening the focus significantly, but it was likely a case of grow or die since the PC nerd market isn’t anywhere near what it used to be.

True, although in many of the comics I read in my youth (mostly 1980s) Kurt was depicted as a very dark blue to the point that they made significant amounts of him look black.

Would’ve been nice to link to his source .zip file so we didn’t have to find it for ourselves. Closest I could find on quick first try was 2020-2021 in EPUB & PDF formats - possibly using scanned pages.
