I use volumio but that’s dedicated OS installation and it’s limiting in the sense of what other things can be done.

I’m looking to setup streaming to HTPC. What r my options?

I found uPnP is not advised due to security risk, however I didn’t see any other recommendation.

[EDIT] [UPDATE] now I understand why information was so lacking - because solution was just that simple. 😑

In gnome settings -> sharing -> enable media sharing.

Don’t need extra app or setup.

There are different uPnP things: one that lets apps open ports in your router (security risk) and one with media renderer (safe).

I was overthinking it bit too much. I simply have to enable sharing

Is there an explanation somewhere about how to do this? I was thinking I needed uPnP server on HTPC but after reading some more realized that’s probably not the thing. Then I found VLC should be able to do it (https://www.baeldung.com/linux/upnp-dlna-clients)

we just select Universal Plug’n’Play from theLocal Network category on the left.

but after that it doesn’t just show up under device where I can cast

I think gmediarenderer is what I’m looking for

Oh wow, I just kept thinking renderer somehow opens ports for accepting streams. Let me revisit it then.
