It’s not about making it better for the US, but to ensure the EU has the diesel it needs to keep running. The US has basically said they won’t export diesel, so the EU is responding by making it’s reserves available to the EU.

If the US demanded to release reserves or and threaded an export ban, the EU releasing their reserves is in the interest of the US.
