As someone in the US with pretty good paid sick leave (there are many of us, but certainly not most people working lower-wage jobs), I think the joke here is that they are requesting 30 days up front and fashioning it as a threat
Sure, but again my perception is that’s genuinely not what this is about. Based on the info we have, this guy is threatening to expose everyone to covid unless he gets 30 days off and did not attach any info about having seen a doctor

As someone from the civilised world, the only acceptable amount of paid sick leave is infinite (with doctors note).
If the doctor says you’ll need 30 days to heal, then you get 30 sick days up front. nothing funny about that.
