I would assume it’s the child’s age, they don’t want to broadcast personal details of their child on the Internet so they refer to them by their age so the context of the story still makes sense.
If they just called them as Son or daughter and told the rest of that story I would assume their still living at home in the parents basement 27 year old was just a dickhead.
I called mine’s thing 1 and thing 2 for a while. TBF, their parents had let them temp dye their hair blue. I stopped by one evening, and the kids were wearing matching red PJs, with blue hair, climbing the walls in pre bedtime hyperness.

Usually when people do this “3” would refer to their third child regardless of age. But it’s ambiguous.
I call my friend’s kids #1 and #2.
I use #2 and B. No preferential treatments.
