Wow. That was… Quite a read. I have to… Go… Do stuff now… I feel like I just acquired a brain worm from reading that.

8·11 days agoThe saddest part is that if you live in the racist regions in the usa long enough with light skin, you will eventually adapt to those sunnier areas and just be dark. And then to further complicate issues, global climate change.
So you go in as a vampire imperialist, set down and get rid of anybody with darker skin than you, and slowly over time you end up having just as dark of skin, and then the lighter skin humans come in and kick YOUR ass and the process repeats.
Hating people for skin color is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard, on par with being afraid of your own shadow.

1·12 days agoA long time ago, I was with a group of friends choosing music for one of their weddings. We were listening to some 90s song and the groom was like “ah yeah this is a good song” and I laughed and was like “you know this song is about killing yourself, right?” At first he doubted, but then really taken aback, and then looked up the lyrics and, to my understanding, never listened to it again.
I’m trying to remember the song, but can’t. If I do remember, I’ll edit this comment. But yeah, it’s wild how hardly understandable lyrics can dramatically change a songs meaning and feel.

You should try consuming good translations in subtitles with notes! There’s so much more to be had, since you aren’t wiping it all away permanently with a careless dub. It’s much closer to what the original work is.
You ever watch a thing as a kid growing up, and then years later you watch it again and realize your comprehension and perspective has grown and you understand the thing so much more? That’s the power of original art. And sure, you aren’t erasing all of it with a dub, but even the intention of subtle voice cracks are gone from the original actor’s exasperation.
There’s a lot more communication and language than simply the words said. Imagine if, in a courtroom in front of a judge, you typed your words and the opposing legal team then read them aloud to the judge and jury.
Or imagine if instead of an audio/video piece of art, it were a different medium like just music, and you produced and recorded and designed an album, and then in order to localize it, people would use eq to carve out the vocal range, and then recorded themselves saying Google translate of your words.
Translation is HARD with any method. Dubbing is much more of a compromise than added text translation, even with the best vocalist, because it is a complete loss of basically half of the original data.

2·13 days agoI didn’t know those were the words until like last year when the song came up in topic and people were talking about how it was such a wild song and I had no idea what was happening
Actually, if you don’t mind me double post responding to you, I forgot to ask: how did they change MASH? I just looked it up (MASH is a little before my time) and MASH stands for “Mobile Army Surgical Hospital”. Which is pretty literal.
I’m very curious.
Ohhh, you meant the entire show. I was thinking of just this comic.
Yeah if you wanted to do the entire show, that would basically have to be anime fansub style with a bunch of notes… But even then, I’m not sure. Sometimes, culture specific stuff is super hard and you just gotta let it either not get translated or do your best. On a non-pausable platform like tv might be a bit difficult, too.
I’ve heard some amazing localized dub songs recently. I think so far the crown still goes to the American original Pokemon intro. https://youtu.be/6xKWiCMKKJg compared to the original, it’s insanely different, not just in song, but also in tone https://youtu.be/d-lEahV5Q_o
And I recently watched Dragonball Z in Japanese for the first time and it was great. Then I heard the Spanish/Mexican dub of the intro and it’s… Wildly high effort and really close to the original for what sounds like a 100% from scratch performance. Original: https://youtu.be/zq-zp0VfQes vs Spanish: https://youtu.be/cie7scVUdQE
Like I just listened to the Latino version just now again and I was worried for a bit that maybe they used a vocal-less backing track. But I’m like 70% sure it’s a complete re-performace of all the instrumentals too. Which is like… Unheard of. Apparently Mexican people really love Dragonball.
Anyway, as far as a translation of Bill Nye as a show, I think it could be done, but would take a TON of effort, and the team would have to decide how much knowledge the target audience knows about American culture from the 90s. Honestly, it might be a cool project to see: a 2026 Czechoslovakian fansub of all of Bill Nye the Science Guy.
Stranger things have happened hahaha
As a person with strong opinions on translation philosophies… as long as you don’t try to localize it or ignore the puns and culture, but instead explain it… Probably fine.
Learning about other cultures is cool.
Not learning about other cultures is lame.

7·16 days agoAlso fascinating is that there was this window of games that tried using various “ok” buttons. Like, I think it was originally the Start button, then some games tried even Triangle or even Square. Conventions are weird.
I just appreciate that Sony put a lot of effort into trying to make their buttons memorable and intuitive. The green Triangle points up, the cancel blue Square is down, the pink Square is left (like where you’d hold a shield), and the red ok/yes Circle is on the right. They made the convention, and haven’t fucked with it at all.
I also appreciate their buttons being labeled and numbered. Like L1 and L2, vs msft’s… Shoulder? Bumper? R1? Trigger? I alternate between shoulder and bumper, but they could have called it Frank and it would have been better. Imagine if they had weirdly given each button proper names.

11·16 days agoNah. Xbox came out years after the PlayStation. The reason the usage of the ps controller got switched in NA is because they did some studies and people just tried to use ps X-button as the accept button.
Xbox is an abomination amalgamation of everything that came before it: Nintendo, PlayStation, and Sega. Look at those controllers, keeping in mind they came first, and it’s painfully obvious what Microsoft was up to. They can’t even come up with creative names. Hell, they even bought halo. And in an era of free online services, only Microsoft pushed everything into being paid and micro transactions. A LOT of the enshittification is Microsoft’s fault.
Compare to N64, which came before xbox, and know that Microsoft could have made any design they wanted, but didn’t.

13·18 days agoThis is the shit children do. Like LITTLE kids, like under 10 when they try to “trick” you. I remember doing something like this when I was maybe 7. I pretended to be crushed by a pile of fallen (empty cardboard) boxes. My mom walked by and just ignored me.
Imagine being A FULLY GROWN MAN. Yikes

I like weird ui things though. There’s too much homogenization in ui these days. I’m okay with certain conventions, but I’m 100% behind chasing beautiful and expressive ui, as long as it’s functional.
