Watch the movie ‘Network.’
Like ‘Idiocracy’ it went from cutting edge satire to bland docudrama in real time.

That’s why when I read Ms. Slaughter’s line it really hit home.
I was seeing the macho image they wanted to convey, and ignoring the hurt children who were lashing out.

I always thought of it in terms of "we’re professional criminals, we go against the police and society as a whole.
“We don’t want to be locked up with dirty perverts.”
I saw it as a pride thing, tbh.

Karin Slaughter is one of my favorite crime novelists.
She had an interesting take; she said that the reason child molesters have trouble in prison is because a lot of the prisoners were molested themselves. It isn’t about avenging other people’s kids.

Someone was talking about online sports betting.
The pointed out that it’s aimed at young men who like sports anyway. Now they have a toxic and addictive app running 24/7.

Even 100 years ago there was social pressure on young men to learn how to behave properly. Being kicked out of the local church meant that you couldn’t hang with your friends and would probably have to leave town.
Today, you can spend 20 hours a day online, hearing exactly what you want to hear.

What was he supposed to do?
Jump on a bus?
If you’d been born in his hometown you probably would have considered joining up too.
You aren’t better than him, just luckier.

Why do people who grew up with memes act like understanding a news headline is beyond their comprehension?

Back in the day, then-NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg introduced a wide ranging plan to stop City workers from unfairly collecting overtime. The project, CityTime, was supposed to cost about $65 million. Somehow, the cost swelled to over $1 billion.
The plan was being run by Bloomberg’s daughter.

Not a doctor, but it looks to me like it’s an actual increase, not just an increase in diagnosis

Isaac Asimov was a professional writer long before he entered his doctorate program. When he was writing his thesis he was advised to try to make it sound like it had been written by a chemist and not an author.
To practice ‘scientific’ style writing he wrote a comic piece.

I have no opinion one way or the other.
They broke the case ‘Goodfellas’ is based on because someone parked a van full of evidence in an illegal spot.
Copilot Search Branding
The “Goodfellas” Van Parking Incident In the real-life events that inspired Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, the infamous Lufthansa heist at JFK Airport on December 11, 1978, ended with a botched getaway that became a cautionary tale in mob history.
The robbery, masterminded by James “Jimmy the Gent” Burke and his crew, including Henry Hill, netted over $5 million in cash and $875,000 in jewelry — the largest single robbery in U.S. history at the time . After the heist, the stolen Ford Econoline van was supposed to be taken to a car compactor in New Jersey for destruction
Instead, Parnell “Stacks” Edwards, the getaway driver, took a detour to his girlfriend’s apartment in Brooklyn. Rather than follow the plan, he parked the van in a no-parking zone in Canarsie, Brooklyn . Police didn’t find it immediately — it was two days later that they located it, and Edwards’ fingerprints were on the vehicle

For decades American kids were taught that the Japanese were the lowest of the low because they bombed Pearl Harbor with no warning, also while discussing peace.
Trump would have heard the story over and over as a lad.

My favorite Kirk quote is when he blithely said that school shootings were the price America had to pay for freedom. I am glad that he got a chance to die for something he believed in.

Look up Horst Wessel
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horst_Wessel
The tl, dr is that Horst was a sleazy character who joined the Nazis because he liked being a bully. After a beef with his landlady he got killed by some locals she’d brought to protect herself.
After his death, Horst became a symbol of the Nazi Party and the song commemorating his death became a standard at Nazi events and marches.

Someone asked Ernest Hemingway how he lost all his money.
“Gradually, then all at once.”
Same situation. One person says something and it’s dismissed. Ten people say it and it becomes gossip fodder. A hundred people say it and it becomes an open secret. A million people say it and he gets arrested.

True. there’s no accounting for taste.

I don’t get it.
It’s like saying you can’t enjoy a song if it’s been used in a TV ad.
Because that’s what the author chose.
Epstein was no fool.
Compartmentalization is a thing.
Did they suspect something was going on? Hell yes.
Did they ever actually see anything illegal. Hell no.
