Even so, there’s going to be just as little restraint and oversight in this product as the last one. Scope wasn’t the issue, it’s that the companies are collecting more data than they say they are and police are using them to find crime, not just investigate crime.

Changing tech is usually a lot harder than adoption. Better methods and protocols will keep emerging to fight new digital threats but with physical threats usually don’t change. Only exception is social engineering (e.g. attacking a locked door by tricking someone into opening it). Even then a physical presence is required and someone can’t enter a locked room from 2000 miles away.

It’s called paying people to watch the systems during off-hours. It’s often way cheaper than setting up firewalls, setting up alerts, maintaining patches, paying a VPN company to manage connections, paying another company to handle authentication, and so on. Security constraints are getting so bad at my office I’m seriously thinking of how we can do more things with pen and paper.

My employer does this too. It is a layoff technically but employees are given the opportunity to interview for another position in the company if they want to stay. If it was a “restructuring” the employees would’ve been moved to another department and possibly a new role without their consent.

I’m sure there are right and wrong ways to apply digital learning but I also think adoption has been driven by tech companies and anyone that is starstruck by the “potential” of these devices. I can almost guarantee there were no long-term studies performed prior to sticking all kinds of screens in front of kids faces. Humans have been learning and teaching for millennia using physical mediums. It’s very foolish to think we, as a species, can suddenly shift to a new medium in a single generation with no ill effects.

If it so much as has a button to change text size I know kids would rather mash that button and watch the screen go crazy than to pay attention to the lesson.
